One of my all-time favorite books is The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. In the true holocaust account Corrie's sister, Betsie, displayed a stunningly poignant picture of gratitude even in the most horrific concentration camp circumstance. She insisted on thanking God for the fleas that infested every inch of their barracks.
Corrie later came to see that Betsie was not wrong as the fleas kept the guards from making their typical rounds in the sisters' barracks. Safe from the typical abuse and harassment, the ladies were able to continue reading the Bible and praying with the women around them, offering much hope.
So today may we echo Betsie's beautiful faith and say, "Even in this, I can still give thanks."
